The School's Structure

Rastrick Independent School caters for children aged from 0 to 16 years. The Nursery School, Phoenix House, feeds the Pre-Preparatory Department at Close Lea House, which in turn feeds the Preparatory section of the Main School. Priority is given to children already attending the school although, since we have a registered list for entry, we also require an assurance from parents that their child is to continue their education throughout school.

The Main School

KINDERGARTEN  (4 - 5 years)

We only accept children into main school if they are to remain with us until the age of 11+ (end of Year 6 at least).  We do not prepare children for external examinations at ages 8+ 9+ or 10+.  We do, however, prepare children for Grammar School Examinations at 11+ including our own Rastrick Grammar.

Children normally move into Kindergarten for full-time education at the beginning of the academic year after they reach 4 years of age.  Priority is given to children already attending the school, we do however require an assurance from the parents that their child is to continue throughout school as we have a registered list for entry to school.

Pre-National Curriculum syllabus and French are continued and expanded.  Swimming is now part of the timetable.  There is no extra cost for either French or Swimming.

The six areas of learning which make up The Early Learning Goals for Children’s Learning as determined by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (Q.C.A.) are followed.

Kindergarten is situated in the main school building on Ogden Lane, where the rest of the Preparatory School is based.  There is a separate outdoor play area for Kindergarten, providing the essential space needed for the development of dexterity and manipulative skills.

This department is, however, a preparation for the main school, encouraging growing independence, extending a more structured curriculum, whilst embracing the whole curriculum through play and moving towards the preparatory school environment.

Junior Preparatory    (5 - 7 Years)

We believe that a good Preparatory School prepares children not only for the next phase of education, but also for life.

Here, the children enter into a more formal stage of education (Key Stage 1, National Curriculum) there is still emphasis on teaching concepts through practical activities.

Emphasis is on traditional learning skills as the school intends to retain the best of the old, tried and tested methods, whilst developing a broad-based curriculum.

Sports, music and extra-curricular activities also feature largely to give children the opportunity to develop within their potential with well-balanced attitudes towards healthy competition.

French is taught.

Senior Preparatory (11 - 16 years)

In this final stage, each child receives the best of formal educations, based on first-hand experiences (Key Stage 2, National Curriculum), with individual education programmes.  Latin is also offered.

An examination syllabus is in place for four years through Upper 3, Upper 4, Upper 5 and Upper 6.  This, together with the National Curriculum and our own school syllabus, should gain our children academic places at Rastrick or any Grammar School.  For the non-academic children, their individual work programme will prepare them for the Senior School.  Rastrick Grammar is a perfect choice for parents, being the only Grammar School in the area which offers a full GCSE curriculum and Vocational courses.
